Union monuments at Gettysburg > Massachusetts
More than 125,000 men from Massachusetts joined the United States Army during the Civil War. These were organized into 26 regiments and 3 battalions of infantry, 6 regiments and 1 battalion of cavalry, 4 regiments and 1 battalion of heavy artillery, 52 batteries of light artillery, and 2 companies of sharpshooters.
Almost 5,800 of these men fought in the Battle of Gettysburg, the third largest contingent of any of the Union states. There were eighteen infantry and one cavalry regiments, the two companies of sharpshooters, and four batteries of light artillery. Each of these 25 units has its own monument on the battlefield. Around 1,540 Massachusetts men – 26% – became casualties at Gettysburg, the third highest total of the eighteen Union states that fought there. (see the States at Gettysburg)
