Detailed Strength and Casualty Numbers
for the Army of Northern Virginia in the Battle of Gettysburg
These numbers are rounded approximations rather than a precise count. Confederate unit records are more fragmentary than those for the Union. Only about one third of the army’s company muster rolls are available for the period just before the battle. Many companies might have not taken the roll in the midst of the marching and foraging of the invasion, and the heavy casualties suffered in the battle doubtless saw many muster reports buried with their company clerks. The different methods used by researchers to resolve the gaps in the information result in a large difference in estimates. The numbers in the table below are a middle ground.
“Strength”
The number of men “present for duty equipped.” These are the men actually ready for combat on the battlefield. This does not count units that were not on the Gettysburg battlefield on July 1-3, such as Robertson’s, Jones’ and Imboden’s Cavalry Brigades guarding trains in the army’s rear. They also do not count men who were on sick call or in the hospital, or were detailed to supply or other duties which took them out of the battle lines.
“Killed”
Counts men who were killed or who died within the year of a mortal wound.
“Wounded”
Counts wounded men and men who were wounded and captured. Many lightly wounded men who were able to remain in the ranks were not counted.
“Missing”
Counts men who were captured unwounded, as well as those who ran away, or who were killed and whose bodies were not identified.
Many Confederate regiments and batteries did not submit casualty figures for the battle or omitted categories such as the wounded or missing. The brigade totals affected by this missing information in the table below and the division, corps and army totals that they feed into are marked by an asterisk (*) and should be considered as underreported.
