Rhode Island sent 21,000 men to the Union Army in the Civil War. Almost 1,000 were at Gettysburg. They were organized in an infantry regiment and five artillery batteries. (see the States at Gettysburg) There are only four monuments to Rhode Island units on the battlefield. Batteries C and G of the 1st Rhode Island Artillery were in reserve with the Sixth Corps. They did not take part in any fighting and did not erect monuments on the battlefield.
