Union monuments at Gettysburg > United States Regulars
By June of 1863 the Army of the Potomac had arranged its artillery into brigades of 4 or more batteries. Each Infantry Corps was assigned an Artillery Brigade. Each had anywhere from one to three batteries of U.S. Regulars. The Cavalry Corps was assigned two Artillery Brigades, one of which was entirely Regulars. In addition, there were five Reserve Artillery Brigades which could assign batteries as needed to augment a position or replace batteries that had depleted their ammunition or taken heavy losses. One of these Reserve Artillery Brigades was made up entirely of Regulars while the others were made up entirely of Volunteers.
It was thought that mixing one or more Regular batteries with Volunteer batteries in every Brigade would have the result of improving the quality of the Volunteers by example. And it seems that this was the case, as it was generally felt that the Union artillery was the strongest branch of the army.
