The View South Along the Summit

The trail moves down from the high point of the hill at Hazlett’s Battery to the southern end of the summit of Little Round Top, marked by the monument to the 44th New York. The difference in elevation can be seen as the windows in the top level of the monument’s four story tower are at roughly eye level to the photographer. The hill in the distance that is mostly hidden behind the trees near the 44th New York monument is Big Round Top. It stands about 130 feet higher than Little Round Top, but being completely covered in trees was of little defensive value during the battle. The ground drops about 75 feet from the highest point of Little Round Top to a saddle between the two hills before climbing again.
