During the furious artillery barrage that preceded Pickett’s Charge, Captain Andrew Cowan’s First New York Independent Battery (map) was ordered to take the place of the wrecked Rhode Island Battery B just to the south of the Copse of Trees. According to the monument, “Skirmishing had just commenced. The Confederate lines were over the defenses and within ten yards of our guns. Our loss was four men and fourteen horses killed, two lieutenants and six men wounded.”
