At dusk on July 2 two Confederate brigades attacked Cemetery Hill, throwing back the Union defenders and reaching the line of artillery on the crest (including Wiedrich’s New York Battery, featured on another bronze tablet). The 73rd Pennsylvania Infantry (map) counterattacked from its position in the cemetery. The scene shows the hand-to-hand fighting for the batteries, with Union reinforcements coming in from the right, some Union artillerymen wielding rammers and fence rails, and the Evergreen Cemetery Gatehouse in the background.
