“Discovering the Enemy”

The 9th New York Cavalry (map) was one of two cavalry regiments picketing the west side of Gettysburg on July 1 that claimed to have fired the first shot of the Battle of Gettysburg. “Discovering the Enemy” by sculptor Caspar Buberl shows Lieutenant Alphonse Hodges about to make that shot. The ‘First Shot Controversy‘ continues to this day.
