Union monuments at Gettysburg > United States Regulars
Monuments to 11 United States Infantry Regiments from the Regular Army are on the battlefield at Gettysburg. Ten were organized into two brigades of the Fifth Corps, while the 8th United States Infantry was attached to Army headquarters serving as the Provost Guard for the army.
From the war’s first great battle at Bull Run a small, solid core of Regulars provided both an example in competence and discipline for the thousands of volunteers of the Army of the Potomac and the last reserve for its commanders. George Sykes had been their commander, and even though he had just been elevated to corps command they remained under him.
