This view is from Birney Avenue on the western edge of the Peach Orchard. It looks east toward the Rose Woods, with the white “castle” of the 44th New York monument visible on Little Round Top just over a mile in the distance. Big Round Top is on the right, about a mile and a quarter away. The Union Signal Corps post on Little Round Top could easily observe Confederate troop movements well beyond this location. Longstreet altered his approach march to the attack on July 2 because the road he was using a mile and a half to the rear of this spot was visible to the lookout post. The change delayed the attack over an hour, lost time which he paid dearly for at the end of the day.
