So wait, some viewers may be thinking, we’ve travelled the length of Little Round Top’s summit. Why haven’t we seen the monument to the famous Twentieth Maine?
Because the monument to the Twentieth Maine isn’t on the summit. In fact, it’s quite a ways down the south side of the hill, almost to the bottom of the saddle connecting with Big Round Top. Chamberlain’s men were protecting the flank of the hill, the far opposite end of the line from the 16th Michigan monument in the previous photo. To reach the monument to Chamberlain’s 20th Maine you have to go back to the parking lot along Sykes Avenue and go south about 2/10ths of a mile along a well-marked trail.
