There are three Illinois monuments on the Gettysburg battlefield, honoring the one infantry regiment, one cavalry regiment and five companies of a second cavalry regiment from Illinois that fought here, a little over a thousand men. About 140 of these men (14%) became casualties during the battle. (See the States at Gettysburg) Although Illinois sent a respectable 239 regiments and batteries into the Union army during the Civil War almost all of them served in the western theater.
