Pitzer Woods on the Gettysburg battlefield

Pitzer Woods is on the southern end of Seminary Ridge just north of the intersection of West Confederate Avenue and Millerstown Road. (Google map; Tour map: West Confederate Avenue Part 4) At the time of the battle these woods were owned by Samuel Pitzer, whose house still stands in the Eisenhower National Historic Site.

The 1st United States Sharpshooters scouted the woods towards midday on July 2nd and engaged Alabama troops that were gathering there for Longstreet’s attack. Later in the afternoon Confederate General Barksdale’s Brigade waited in reserve here before its attack toward the Sherfy House.
